Carburetor heat reduces the chance of suffering an engine failure or loss of power control due to carburetor icing. The venturi of a carburetor can cause the air temperature to drop by as much as 40 degrees F (22.2 C). Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. As a result, condensation can occur in the carburetor that freezes to the surfaces inside the carburetor. Ice inside the carburettor can restrict air flow, restrict throttle movement, or break off in large enough chunks to cause engine failure.
